What to Expect at Your Next Eye Exam 👁️

August 21, 2025

If it’s been a while since your last eye check-up (or if it’s your very first one), you might be wondering what to expect. Don’t worry. Eye exams are quick, non-invasive, and incredibly important for keeping your vision and overall eye health in check.

Here’s what a typical eye exam looks like from start to finish:

1. Initial Consultation

You’ll be asked about your general health, any vision issues, and your family history. Whether you’re experiencing headaches, blurry vision, or dry eyes, now’s the time to mention it!

2. Eye Pressure Testing (Tonometry)

This painless test checks for signs of glaucoma by measuring the pressure inside your eyes. You might feel a gentle puff of air, completely normal!

3. Visual Acuity & Refraction

The “Which is better: 1 or 2?” part of the exam! This determines your prescription if you need glasses or contact lenses.

4. Digital Retinal Photography

Advanced imaging lets your optometrist look at the back of your eye, checking for signs of retinal disease, diabetes, or other health concerns.

5. Eye Coordination & Muscle Function Tests

We assess how well your eyes work together, important for depth perception and identifying conditions like strabismus or nerve palsies.

👓 Why It Matters:
Regular eye exams don’t just help you see clearly, they can detect early signs of serious conditions before symptoms even appear.

📅 Haven’t had your check-up in a while? Now’s the time to prioritise your vision.
