Can your diet and healthy living slow down the progression of cataracts?
The precise reasons as to why cataracts develop are still largely unknown, and the only effective...
Read moreWhen it comes to your eye health, clear information is just as important as clear vision. One of the most common questions we hear at SA Eye Specialists is:
“Can macular degeneration be reversed?”
The short answer? No, macular degeneration (MD) cannot be reversed.
But there’s good news: with early detection and the right care, its progression can be slowed, and your quality of life preserved.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is a chronic eye condition that affects the macula—the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. It’s a leading cause of vision loss, particularly in Australians over 50.
There are two main types:
Dry MD: The most common form. It progresses gradually as the macula thins with age.
Wet MD: Less common but more aggressive. It involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels that can leak and cause rapid vision loss.
Why It Can’t Be Reversed
Macular degeneration causes damage to retinal cells that cannot regenerate. Once those cells are lost, the vision they supported cannot return. Unlike cataracts, which can be surgically removed, MD involves permanent changes in the retina itself.
What You Can Do: Slowing the Progression
While we can’t restore lost vision from MD, there are effective treatments to help slow down the disease and support remaining vision:
Regular eye exams can catch MD in its early stages, before major vision loss occurs.
A diet rich in leafy greens, omega-3s, and antioxidants, combined with regular exercise and quitting smoking, can support eye health and slow MD progression.
These specific vitamins and minerals, recommended for certain patients, can help reduce the risk of advanced MD.
Anti-VEGF injections are highly effective at controlling wet MD, preventing further leakage and vision decline.
Supporting Your Vision Every Step of the Way
Living with macular degeneration doesn’t mean giving up your independence or lifestyle. With proper care and support tools, like magnifiers, adaptive lighting, and regular follow-up, you can continue to live a full and active life.
Empower Your Eye Health
Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen. If you’re over 50 or have a family history of MD, regular checkups are essential.
